Bots officially generate more internet traffic than humans, a first in the web's history. Cloudflare's CEO thought the crossover was a 2027 story, then it happened this week. The internet's biggest user is no longer a person. Let's dive in!

Evolving AI: Bot traffic has passed human traffic online for the first time, Cloudflare reports.

Key Points:

  • Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince expected the flip in 2027, not now.

  • One AI agent can hit 5,000 sites where a human would visit five.

  • Agentic AI is driving the surge this time around.

Details:

Cloudflare's network covers roughly one in five websites which makes its data a fair proxy for the wider internet. Bots sat near 20 percent of requests before the AI boom and most of that was search crawlers quietly indexing pages. The new wave grew about eight times faster than human activity over the past year as agents took over browsing tasks people once handled themselves.

Why It Matters:

Convenience is the trade running through all of this. An agent that compares prices or books your trip saves you an afternoon yet it also decides which sites get seen and which reviews count. What you pay and what you choose now depend partly on its judgment. Your browsing still happens, just increasingly without you.

Evolving AI: Google's Gemma 4 12B runs full multimodal AI offline on your own laptop.

Key Points:

  • Gemma 4 12B is Google's first mid-sized model to hear audio natively.

  • A no-encoder design fits vision, audio and text into just 16GB.

  • The weights are completely free for anyone, even for commercial use.

Details:

Google's new Gemma 4 12B runs entirely on your own machine, even while offline. The model handles text, images and raw audio through a single backbone with no separate encoders, a design choice that cuts memory needs down to 16GB while performance still lands close to Google's much larger 26B model. The weights are free under Apache 2.0 and the model is live on Ollama.

Why It Matters:

Native audio is the sleeper detail in this launch, letting a Google model on your laptop hear a recorded meeting, read a contract and reason about both with the WiFi off, work that needed a cloud subscription months ago. The 16GB bar means millions of machines bought for browsing just became AI hardware.

Evolving AI: Law professors judged the answers blind and picked the machine over their peers.

Key Points:

  • Gemini 2.5 Pro and NotebookLM beat professor answers across nearly 3,000 blind comparisons.

  • Professors rated the best AI responses level with their strongest colleague.

  • The questions were hypotheticals where two opposing arguments can both be strong.

Details:

Sixteen contract law professors from 14 US schools wrote answers to the questions students bring after class. Gemini 2.5 Pro and NotebookLM answered the same ones. In nearly 3,000 blind comparisons the professors picked AI 75 percent of the time. They also flagged AI answers as misleading just 3.5 percent of the time while their own peers drew that warning at 12 percent.

Why It Matters:

Professors trusted the machine's explanations over their own colleagues', and these were the hard ones, the questions where a student actually needs someone good to sit down and walk them through it. NotebookLM was in that winning lineup, so that kind of help no longer depends on getting into the right school.
