🚨 Sam Altman RETURNS as CEO OpenAI
Evolving AI: OpenAI will reinstate Sam Altman and revamp its board with new directors, marking a surprising turn of events that has captivated Silicon Valley and the international AI community.
If you wish to catch up on the first 72 hours of this story, make sure to read our newsletter issued on Monday. The coverage continues from Microsoft's announcement of collaborating with Sam Altman and Greg Brockman. Here's a recap of what transpired in the past 48 hours.
OpenAI's New Era:
Newly appointed interim CEO of OpenAI Emmett Shear sends lengthy tweet about his decision to join OpenAI.
Greg Brockman tweets, “We are going to build something new & it will be incredible”.
Mira Murati and hundreds of OpenAI employees all tweet out in solidarity “OpenAI is nothing without its people”.
The Turn of the Tides:
Co-Founder and Board member Illya Sutskever tweets, “I deeply regret my participation in the board’s actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we’ve built together and I will do everything I can to reunite the company”.
Sutskever flipped his position following intense deliberations with OpenAI employees as well as an emotionally charged conversation with Brockman’s wife, Anna Brockman, at the company’s offices, during which she cried and pleaded with him to change his mind, according to people familiar with the matter.
A United Front:
505 of 700 OpenAI employees sign a letter telling the board to resign. Ilya Sutskever is on the list.
97% (747/770) of OpenAI employees end up signing the letter.
The Power Play:
Sam Altman and Greg Brockman’s move to Microsoft isn’t a done deal. They are still plotting a return to OpenAI. Pressure is on the board to still resign gracefully after the flipping of Ilya Sutskever. Sam Altman is still trying to return as OpenAI CEO.
Two more board members must change their minds for Sam Altman and Greg Brockman to return.
Rebellion at the HQ:
OpenAI employees at the company’s SF HQ refused to attend an all hands scheduled with new CEO Emmett Shear on Sunday.
Governance and Surprises:
Altman tweet reassuring that him and CEO of Microsoft Satya Nadella are focused on OpenAI customers.
Satya Nadella did interviews on CNBC and Bloomberg TV and made clear that it’s very possible Altman could go back to OpenAI
Whispers of a Coup:
OpenAI’s Go-To-Market Manager retweets a post saying this was all about Poe. Poe is a platform that lets people ask questions, get instant answers, and have back-and-forth conversations with a wide variety of AI-powered bots, owned by Quora. Interestingly, Quora’s CEO Adam D’Angelo is one of OpenAI’s board members.
Shortly after firing Altman, OpenAI’s board approached Dario Amodei, the co-founder and CEO of rival Anthropic, about a potential merger. Antrophic declined this.
Negotiations and Resignations:
Sam Altman and the OpenAI board are back in talks for his possible return, specifically speaking with Adam D’Angelo and other board members.
Interim CEO Emmett Shear says he will resign if the OpenAI board can’t provide evidence of why they fired Sam Altman.
New information about board member and CEO of Quora, Adam D’Angelo, surfaces that he sometimes fired executives without considering the impact on employees.
Board Member's Critique Triggers OpenAI Showdown:
Helen Toner wrote a paper which seemed to criticize OpenAI while praising their competitor Anthropic. Sam Altman, after reading this emailed the team, reprimanding Toner saying that it was dangerous to the company as “any amount of criticism from a board member carries a lot of weight.”
Sam was trying to push Helen out for her academic paper critical of OpenAI; Ilya sided with her to push out Sam. Helen was ‘OK’ to destroy OpenAI for its mission.
The Comeback:
OpenAI announce they’ve received an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO.
