LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
Evolving AI: The Academy has banned AI-generated performances and screenplays from Oscar eligibility.
Key Points:
Synthetic performers are ineligible, and screenplays must be human-authored
AI tools in production are still permitted
The rules begin with the March 2027 ceremony
Details:
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences just drew a clear line. Filmmakers can keep using AI in the workflow, but synthetic actors and machine-written scripts won't qualify for awards. The Academy can also request proof of human authorship. The pressure is pretty real. Val Kilmer, who died in April 2025, will appear in an upcoming indie film entirely through AI, this came into limelight after Bytedance's Seedance 2.0 recently spat out a viral fake clip of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt fighting on a rooftop.
Why It Matters:
Hollywood's been quietly building this fence for a while now. The 2023 strikes, the new SAG-AFTRA deal just signed days ago, the WGA's expanded AI rules, and now the Oscars all point in the same direction. AI can help make the movie, but the credit, the consent, and the prestige stay with humans. The harder question is whether that line holds once the AI work gets too good to spot.

CHINA
⚖️ China Says No to AI Layoffs
Evolving AI: A Chinese court has ruled out firing of workers to replace them with AI, marking a notable stand on automation-driven job cuts.
Key Points:
The Hangzhou Intermediate People's Court said tech progress is not a valid reason to end a contract
The decision lines up with Beijing's growing focus on labor stability amid the AI race
It is the second such ruling in China in under six months
Details:
In China, Zhou was hired in 2022 to check large language model outputs. In 2025 the company moved to replace him with an LLM, offering a demotion and a 40% pay cut. He refused, and got fired. The court ruled the firing did not meet legal grounds such as downsizing or operational hardship. The decision is not binding precedent as China uses civil law, but it follows a similar ruling in December against a mapping firm that cited AI.
Why It Matters:
The EU AI Act flags workplace AI as high-risk starting this August, China is now backing workers in court, and the US is mostly letting the market sort it out while Block's stock jumped right after it cut 4,000 jobs in the name of AI. The pattern is pretty clear. Whoever sets the rules around AI and labor first is going to shape what work even looks like for the next decade.

💳 Stripe Hands AI Agents a Wallet
Evolving AI: Stripe launches Link, a digital wallet which lets AI agents shop and pay for you.
Key Points:
Link spans web, iOS, and Android, holding cards, banks, crypto, and BNPL in one wallet.
Your agent connects through a simple OAuth flow and never your raw credentials
Every spend request currently requires user approval, with broader spending limits and autonomous approvals coming later.
Details:
Link announced at Stripe's Sessions 2026 conference, Link is built on top of the company's new Issuing for agents stack. It sends over a spend request with all the context like merchant, amount, and reason, and then you tap to approve. Link already reaches over 200 million people and works with agents like OpenClaw. Stablecoin support is also coming soon, and developers can also skip building their own wallets and just plug into Link directly through Stripe's APIs.
Why It Matters:
Stripe via Link is not really competing on protocols or rails, but on trust. Link already plugs into ChatGPT, Copilot, Meta, and now Gemini, which means your wallet follows you across every major agent. With 250 million users already on Link, that's a pretty different bet than Visa or Mastercard are making at the network level. Stripe is trying to become the consumer's identity in agentic commerce, the one piece that stays constant while the agents themselves keep changing.
