Evolving AI: Kyutai introduces Moshi, an open-source AI assistant for natural conversations.
Key Points:
Kyutai's Moshi can converse in real-time with low latency.
It's the first public AI with this capability, using an "Audio Language Model."
Moshi's demo is available now, with open-source release planned.
Details:
French AI lab Kyutai has launched Moshi, an AI assistant capable of natural, real-time conversations. Developed by a small team in six months, Moshi utilizes an innovative "Audio Language Model" to process audio directly, bypassing traditional speech-to-text conversion. With latency between 200 and 240 milliseconds, Moshi promises fluid interactions. The assistant, trained with diverse data, operates on a 7-billion parameter model, and features a consistent voice thanks to voice actress Alice. Kyutai plans to open-source Moshi soon, inviting developers to explore and expand its capabilities.
Why It Matters:
While OpenAI has delayed the launch of its Voice Mode for GPT-4o, others are seizing this opportunity to gain ground and traction. Although Moshi isnāt the best or smartest model youāll ever use, the latency is very impressive and offers your first experience of actually talking to an AI in real-time. Will this be a peek into the future of whatās to come?

Evolving AI: BMW partners with Figure for deploying AI-driven humanoid robots in car assembly.
Key Points:
Figure's humanoid robot 01 now aids in BMW's South Carolina production facility.
Neural networks guide the robot's actions by mapping pixels to movements.
Other automakers, including Mercedes, are also adopting similar AI technologies.
Details:
Figure's 01 humanoid robot has taken its first steps in BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina facility, showcasing its ability to assist in vehicle assembly. The fully autonomous robot operates using neural networks that convert camera pixels into precise actions. This innovation is part of Figure's commercial agreement with BMW, initiated in January 2024. The robot, standing 1.6 meters tall and weighing 60 kilograms, can handle various tasks, from sheet metal handling to warehouse management, after a training period of up to 24 months. This deployment is part of a broader trend, with companies like Mercedes also leveraging AI robots to aid human workers in repetitive and hazardous tasks.
Why It Matters:
The adoption of AI-powered humanoid robots like Figure 01 in the factory line is one of the first cases, but weāre sure to see many more. Amazon is already widely adopting robots in its company structure, with the number growing to more than 750,000 robots last year.

Evolving AI: Salesforceās xLAM-1B model beats larger AI models with just 1 billion parameters.
Key Points:
Salesforceās new xLAM-1B model outperforms larger models in function-calling tasks.
The modelās success is due to innovative data curation with the APIGen pipeline.
xLAM-1B excels in performance, surpassing models like GPT-3.5-Turbo and Claude-3 Haiku.
Its compact size makes it ideal for on-device applications, offering powerful AI without large computational resources.
Details:
Salesforceās xLAM-1B, also known as the āTiny Giant,ā demonstrates that smaller models can outperform their larger counterparts. The xLAM-1B model, with just 1 billion parameters, excels in function-calling tasks, often beating models with significantly more parameters, such as GPT-3.5-Turbo. This remarkable efficiency stems from the APIGen pipeline, which generates high-quality, diverse, and verifiable datasets for training. The modelās success highlights the importance of data quality over sheer size, indicating a shift in AI development strategies. This advancement paves the way for on-device AI applications, making powerful AI more accessible and practical for everyday use.
Why It Matters:
Salesforceās achievement challenges the trend of ever-larger AI models, showing that efficiency and data quality can lead to superior performance. This could drive new research into optimizing AI models, reduce computational demands, and enable sophisticated AI capabilities on everyday devices.
