Evolving AI: Microsoft unveils three new models in its Phi-3.5 series, surpassing competitors like Google and OpenAI in key areas.
Key Points:
Microsoft introduced three Phi-3.5 models: mini-instruct, MoE-instruct, and vision-instruct.
These models target fast reasoning, advanced reasoning, and visual analysis tasks.
Outperforming Google and OpenAI in benchmarks.
Details:
Microsoft just rolled out three new AI models as part of its Phi-3.5 series: Phi-3.5-mini-instruct, Phi-3.5-MoE-instruct, and Phi-3.5-vision-instruct. These models, which vary from 3.8 billion to 41.9 billion parameters, are designed for quick thinking, solving complex problems, and working with multiple types of data. They even outperform big names like Google’s Gemini 1.5 Flash and OpenAI’s GPT-4o in key tests. What's impressive is that these models are smaller and use less data, which means they're easier to run on your own computer. This breakthrough puts Microsoft ahead in the race, offering powerful AI tools that are accessible to more people.
Why It Matters:
The Phi-3.5 models are now available on the AI platform Hugging Face under an MIT license, making them accessible for a wide range of applications. This release aligns with Microsoft’s commitment to providing open-source AI tools that are both efficient and versatile.

Evolving AI: Luma AI has released a new version of its Dream Machine video generator, which can create high-quality, realistic videos from text instructions and images.
Key Points:
Dream Machine 1.5 excels in generating and animating text within videos, a challenging feat for AI.
The model now handles non-English prompts with ease, expanding its global applicability.
With rapid video generation, Luma AI maintains its lead by making cutting-edge technology widely available.
Details:
Just two months after its initial release, Luma AI has upgraded its Dream Machine to version 1.5. This new version improves how it handles text, letting users create animated texts and multilingual videos—something that’s been tough for AI. It's also faster, now producing five seconds of video in only two minutes. Luma AI keeps leading in making powerful video tools easy to use and accessible, staying ahead in a market that's still waiting for OpenAI’s next big thing, Sora.
Why It Matters:
Overall, it isn’t an upgrade on the scale of Runway Gen-2 to Runway Gen-3, as that was a massive leap across the board. Still, it is significant enough to be noticeable and help keep Dream Machine in the top ranks of generative AI video platforms to give creators more options for AI video generation. The competition is hot in this field, with the likes of RunwayML and Kling AI also cranking out new updates
Evolving AI: FinalSpark offers a service by renting cloud access to biocomputers made from human brain cells, promising a leap in efficiency for AI development.
Key Points:
FinalSpark launches rental service for AI-powered by human brain cells.
Biocomputers offer potential 100,000x efficiency over traditional tech.
AI training uses dopamine and electrical signals as reinforcement.
Details:
FinalSpark now offers a service where researchers can use biocomputers made from human brain cells, or organoids, for $500 a month. These organoids are much more energy-efficient—up to 100,000 times more than traditional silicon computers. The training for these AI systems involves using dopamine as a reward and electrical signals for corrections. However, these systems only last about 100 days, requiring either transfer or termination, though future improvements may increase their lifespan.
Why It Matters:
At longer scales, perhaps it could become possible to create AI systems with lifespans similar to our own as a method for aligning the artificial intelligence experience with humanity’s. It is also hypothetically possible that one day, blockchains will run on computers made of organic material.
