⚖️ Major music labels sue AI music startups Suno and Udio
Evolving AI: Major record labels are suing AI music generators Suno and Udio for copyright infringement, alleging the software replicates artists' works without consent.
Key Points:
Major record companies, including Sony and Warner, filed lawsuits accusing Suno and Udio of using AI to replicate copyrighted music.
Suno and Udio's technologies are accused of generating songs that closely mimic existing works without authorization.
The lawsuits seek compensation of $150,000 per work for copyright infringement.
Details:
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has initiated lawsuits against AI startups Suno and Udio, alleging these platforms illegally replicate copyrighted music from various artists. The labels accuse Suno and Udio of illegally copying recordings to train their AI models, generating music that competes directly with the original sound recordings. They seek an injunction and damages for the alleged infringements. Both AI companies argue their technology promotes creativity by generating original outputs, maintaining they do not enable users to duplicate specific artists' styles.
Udio has posted a lengthy and impassioned statement on X, writing: ‘our model does not reproduce copyrighted works’.
Why It Matters:
This case is similar to other lawsuits against AI companies, with the central issue being whether AI training on copyrighted material falls under "fair use" or constitutes infringement. The music industry's lawsuit could potentially set a precedent for the AI industry.
Below are examples of songs that are mentioned in the lawsuit that’d infringe the copyright.
Pretty amazing stuff from the Udio/Suno lawsuits. Record labels were able to basically recreate versions of very famous songs with highly specific prompts, then linked to them in the lawsuits. I made a short compilation here:

Evolving AI: OpenAI's highly anticipated Voice Mode for ChatGPT, showcased alongside GPT-4o, faces delays.
Key Points:
Apple considers partnering with Meta for AI integration.
Apple's AI approach emphasizes practicality.
Apple offers distribution, not payment, to partners.
Details:
Remember the amazing demos we were served by OpenAI a few weeks ago that showed this real-time voice AI assistant? Well, it looks like OpenAI was a bit too eager to showcase it and it bite themselves in the foot. OpenAI's planned new Voice Mode for ChatGPT is facing setbacks. These delays come from the need to enhance content filtering to meet safety standards, thus delaying its availability to a small group of users until late summer. Concurrently, OpenAI faces competitive pressures from Anthropic, which recently launched a competitive model, and internal turmoil over leadership and safety concerns. Despite setbacks, OpenAI continues to expand its influence, securing partnerships in sectors like healthcare and entertainment with its advanced AI technologies.
Why It Matters:
People aren’t happy. After OpenAI’s announcement and the mention that the new Voice Mode would be available in 'a few weeks', many people subscribed to ChatGPT to ensure they would be among the first to use it. However, it turns out that what OpenAI showcased was far from a finished product, and now they’re facing backlash. This couldn’t have come at a better time for Anthropic, as their model Claude 3.5 Sonnet is challenging GPT-4o on many benchmarks and even surpassing it, leading to many people canceling their ChatGPT subscriptions (for now) and switching to Claude.
Evolving AI: Amazon is developing Metis, an AI chatbot to rival ChatGPT.
Key Points:
Metis will provide text and image-based responses, offer source links, and suggest follow-up questions.
Built on Amazon's Olympus model, Metis aims to outperform competitors like ChatGPT and Claude.
The AI will automate complex tasks and integrate closely with theAlexa project.
Details:
Amazon is working on an AI chatbot named Metis, designed to be a direct competitor to ChatGPT. Metis, accessible through a web browser, will deliver both text and image-based responses, offering features such as source linking, follow-up question suggestions, and image generation. The AI will leverage Retrieval Augmented Generation to access current information, enhancing its capability to provide real-time data like stock prices. Metis will also act as an AI agent, capable of automating complex tasks, integrating closely with the “Remarkable Alexa” project. Its rumoured that Amazon is set to launch "Remarkable Alexa" with new subscription model. Powered by Amazon's Olympus model, Metis boasts hundreds of billions of parameters and is expected to surpass competitors like ChatGPT and Claude. Amazon plans to launch Metis in September, in conjunction with a significant Alexa event.
Why It Matters:
Amazon is one of the largest and most capable cloud computing platforms globally, so it makes sense for them to release their own AI chatbot at some point. Combining a Large Language Model (LLM) with AWS provides unmatched scalability, secure data management, and powerful machine learning services. This makes it easy for businesses to deploy and manage advanced AI applications efficiently. Amazon really could be onto something here.
💡 Tip of the day
We all know that AI is here, constantly evolving and integrating into our lives. But where can we see real examples of this in action? Toys “R” Us has just unveiled the world’s first brand commercial entirely generated by AI. This ad was created using OpenAI’s Sora, potentially marking the beginning of a new era for AI-generated commercials.
